The owner of the farm is named Pate Diop. He was a policemen for 32 years and then began cultivating his father’s farm. Pate has a huge family. Polygamy exists in Senegal, so Pate supports two wives and I don’t know how many kids all by what gets produced at the farm. There is no other form of income. There is an African tradition of family farming, and one day Pate wants his entire family to work on the farm. Pate told me he saw a lot of things while he was a policemen and he wants in particular young people in his family to use agriculture to stay out of trouble. He wants to use his family land as a community center of sorts.

Your browser may not support display of this image. I have been using urban gardening for young people in my community in the same way for the last four years, so when he said that it really resonated with me. Pate always talks about his hopes and dreams and goals and sometimes I forget he is 57. Not everyday do you meet people that age talk about their hope and dream. Let alone someone who is 57 and working in the developing world. That is one thing that I really admire about Pate.

That’s why I have no problem waking up every Wednesday and Thursday morning (sometimes everyday of the week) at 7am while even the sun is still asleep to go watering 500 tomatoes 200 peppers, onions, mint, and bissap (indigenous fruit) all by hand. The equipment we use to water is constructed from: the tops and bottom of plastic gasoline containers to hold water and a stick in the middle nailed to the container to carry it. Each one filled with water weight about 7 kilos which is around 15 pounds. After two weeks my shoulders got huge! I work with pate’s family and we’ve all become close. Daouda, Moussa, Manjaay: without this them I wouldn’t have perfected my plant watering skills. A lot of things run through my head while I lug around 30 pounds water over and over. I think a lot about development. I think about how much more we could grow if Pate had an irrigation system instead of gas containers. And how agriculture is the base for development in not only Senegal but most of Africa.

Senegal is 70% rural, which means 70% are farmers but in Senegal’s Sahelian climate there is no water and only 2% of cultivators here can afford a pump. Pate has saved up large sums of his money in order to buy two and still he doesn’t get desired result! I have learned that most African governments promise subsidies for agriculture which in turn promises development only to win votes. This has continued a perpetual cycle of self-interest started by the French during colonization and carried through independence and into today via African bureaucracy. Agricultural development in Africa has had a very stark history and it will take an end of self-interest and a long-term vision along with political action to develop it.

Pate is one of the first people to talk to me about the politics and realities of agriculture in Africa. Pate says, “I have the vision and ambition to develop my farm but I don’t have the materials and finding markets are hard.” Another thing I admire about him is that he works hard and he is humble. He favorite saying is “petit par petit,” or little by little.

Recently, to explore the questions I’ve encountered working with Pate, I set up a meeting with USAID in Dakar and they said that anything I want to know I can ask and they want me to work with them to so it’s a win-win for everyone. I sent in my questions to them so it will be interesting to see what comes of that.

Blog post from Mat Davis, on assignment in Africa

The Geechi.

The words African and American have never carried so much weight as they did while I was on Goree Island. When I was in Dakar, I went to Goree alone because I knew that it would be a special experience for me and I knew that the fellows would respect that. I took a ferry to the island and when I was sitting on the boat I couldn’t stop thinking about my family and our history.

My father’s side of family has knowledge of our origins in America. A lot was retained orally. I know the slave port where my family comes from. It’s called Paris Island. Paris Island is a tiny port outside the Carolinas. The slaves on Paris Island were annexed to the mainland in the 20’s and it’s now a US Marines base. Paris Island like most slave ports carried over a lot of African culture despite enslavement. The culture and language that comes from Paris Island is called Geechi. Almost all of my family down south is Geechi and can some of the language. I take pride in being a fifth generation Geechi and in knowing the history of not only my family but my people in general. Earlier this year I did some research on Paris Island and found that the slaves from that port originated from Mali, Senegal, Guinea and possibly Benin. Once I heard that GCY was sending me to Senegal I knew that it was going to be much more significant than just another “cross cultural” experience.

When the ferry was approaching the island I kept staring at it as a means for mediation trying to clear my head of all pre-conceived notions and expectations. The ferry docked and I got off and completely stunned by the beauty of the Goree. I found a guide and who was a friend of a friend. His name was Babacar he took me on a tour around the island. I learned many facts about Goree on the island. We had lunch and we talked about the challenges in Senegal and in Africa in general. After lunch we went to the “Maison des Esclaves” (house of slaves). I had read so many books about the conditions and treatment slaves but to actually be at one of the main ports where my ancestors were held was surreal. While I was there I walked through the holding cells and the “Door of No Return”.

That visit was huge for me it was the first time I ever felt African and American at the same time. Usually since I’m Black and live in America, I have to constantly be aware of race and, contrary to popular belief, racism isn’t over. We won’t eradicate racism until we deal with the realities that slavery is not far removed and the practices have taken on different forms in today’s world. Goree for me represents the birthplace of the duality of Black America that’s why the visit was so impactful for me. Every question and every answer was right there.

The rest of the day I walked around the island and talked to the locals (not the tourists) and was taken back by all positive energy on the island. I was humble in many ways on Goree. But more than anything I was humbled by our human capacity to come to peace with reality and find ways to heal.

Movie Night - April 29th, 7:00 pm @ Earth House!

Indianapolis based production company Venogram, LLC will creeen a quartet of short works, including the premiere of thier latest film "Thank You For Calling Information Dynamics", on Thursday, April 29th at the Earth House - 237 N. I am here with a program called Global Citizen Year( www.globalcitizenyear.org ) and I’m one of the 11 founding fellows. I got the opportunity through an 18 page application. Anyone at the Earth House can verify that because I was running all around Lockerbie trying to get everything together. Typing everything on the computer asking for rides to the post office and any other logistics there were. Without the Earth House I wouldn’t be here.

I have been learning a lot about myself here. There is something about traveling or just being out of your comfort zone in general that opens you up so you can see what makes you tick. My passion, convictions, insecurities, ego but most importantly you will see what makes you who you really are. I don’t mean that in a corny-ass-self-help-book way, I’m foreal! When you have a sense of identity that is authentic there is nothing that can hold you back. I knew this before I left but I didn’t have it.

For example I live in a village called Gorom 2 which is within the rural community of Sangalkam. Here in Senegal the “official” language is French. Or at least that’s what the French think. But actually the language that the people speak is Wolof which the indigenous language only found in Senegal. One of my biggest challenges was how could I be “myself” without my tongue ( which me and everyone around me believed was my strongest asset). And how in the hell was I to learn not one but two languages! In the beginning it was very difficult because I couldn't express myself. That forced me to self-actualize and find different way to let “Mat” shine through. And honestly it wasn’t as hard as I thought, all I had to do is try. I feel so much more well rounded now and I hope that these blogs will give you some inkling into the insights that have come to me here.

-submitted by Mat Davis, Earth House Ambassador to Senegal :)

OK GO! No scores, no script—just creativity and the imagination unleashed upon a blank slate.

What you won't hear at this festival is anything entirely familiar or pat. All of the musicians involved—from Chicago, to Indy, to New Orleans, to Detroit—bring different influences to bear on their improvisation but steer clear of settling into the established modes of genres. Is it jazz?- yes. Is it rock?- yes. Hip Hop, Musique Concrete…? Yes. It's all of the above and more, in different degrees and at different times.

When visual artists enter the dialogue, it takes on another dimension as musicians will respond not just to sound but visuals, and as musicians and artists alike are informed by each others' improvisation. Video artists and painters will be on hand.

Look for a preview of Blank Slate in this week's edition of NUVO. East St, on May 2. They will play at 9:00 PM with an opening band at 8:00 PM. Cover is $10 and the venue is open to all ages.

The Springfield, MO based band has built a devoted following playing a unique style of music that has been described as a raw, indigenous mountain sound, reinterperated by neo-hillbillies. Big Smith has opened up for headliners like Emmylou Harris and Del McCoury.

Performing together since 1996, the band now does over 100 shows a year. Composed of five cousins, led by frontman Mark Bilyeu, and joined by fiddler Molly Healey, Big Smith is still adored in their native Ozarks. Years of travel though have also earned them a place as a Midwest institution. As Big Smith begins work on album #6 to be released in the summer of 2009, they continue to enjoy the success of the five releases that document their many years together.

Their most recent studio CD is a double disc made with their young fans in mind, "Hay to Zzzzzz: Hillbilly Songs for Kids". It is a generous portion of music - 42 tracks spread across two CDs. Prior to "Hay to Zzzzzz," Big Smith released "Gig," another double CD. Long requested by fans, it is a generous sampling of what one can expect from the band's legendary club appearances. The catalog is rounded out by and a live gospel CD, "Live at Lonestar," that pays tribute to their family's musical roots.

The documentary "Homemade Hillbilly Jam," profiling the band and the music of their extended family, has garnered rave reviews and a legion of new fans through numerous screenings at film festivals around the world. The film will screen at Earth House on April 30th at 7:00 PM.

"It is important that Big Smith is bringing their unique Midwest sound to Indianapolis," said concert organizer Mike Oles. "The music should appeal to a wide group of people; blue grass and country fans, Indie rockers, and all those who are fascinated with America's deeply rooted music."

http://www.myspace.com/bigsmithband

APRIL 17th SPARK A REVOLUTION PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE

Below is the Spark a Revolution Schedule
This is NOT a static event. An Artist Reception will be held March 20th from 5-11PM.

Contemporary American artist Mike Graves, born in Indiana. Extensive travel with his military family provided much influence and cultural diversity for many years before he made his way back to Indianapolis in 1992 to attend Herron School of Art where he studied sculpting and painting for two and a half years. Through his passion for art and his life experiences, he has developed an artistic identity that includes: painter, sculptor, musician.
Mike feels that he was born to be an artist; it comes natural to him, it makes him happy. He is a founding member of the BRIDGE Collective, a collaborative organization of artists, featuring an extensive selection of works. He has enjoyed success showing in galleries and participating in art and music events on local and national levels. Goals for the future are to continue to have fun, make a living thru art and music, and to take his art to an international audience. In his own words: "I think of my work as a free flowing experiment in motion. Utilizing collage elements, painting and mixed media, my mission is to produce work which will relate to and inspire the modern mind."

The Earth to Mike Graves Exhibit runs through April 13th.

Earth House Free Film Forum introduces Dinner and a Movie

PRESS RELEASE/FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS EVENT DATE 2/26/09

CATEGORY: MOVIES/ENTERTAINMENT

Contact: Jennifer Kaye/Mike Oles 636-4060

Earth House begins Dinner & A Movie on February 26th, 2009

TROUBLE THE WATER will be showing at Earth House 237 N. East St.) on Saturday, February 28 , 2009 from 7-11 pm. The Ben Ishmael Revival,
a groove based quartet started by electronica pioneers John Tuttle and Kaiton Slusher, headlines
with Amtrak, The Glitch Clique, and Surreal Estate rounding out the bill.

Alongside the music will be live video by local animator Gibson Thorne and multi-media artist Ian Gunn.

The Ben Ishmael Revival has played recent shows at the Casba and at Birdy’s Bar and
Grill. Theirs is a rockin’ electronic experiment that should not be missed. The Revival is a hard
working group that brings something special to every performance. You must see it to believe it.

Amtrak hails from Morehead, KY. Flipping many styles from House to IDM with equal
mastery, it’s debut EP, "In Transit" has garnered national attention in the underground. Still a
relatively new group - began in 2005 - there is certainly a bright future ahead for Amtrak.

Conceived in 2004, the Glitch Clique is returning to action after a two-year absence.
Featuring the infamous Eric Brown of Audio Recon on everything from samples to drums to
vocals in a duet with jazz composer Bob Wilson – horns, piano, and birdcalls – the Glitch Clique
will surely be a very impressive improvisational performance of sound and music.

Surreal Estate is a mix of the sounds of space sifted through synths, classical keyboards
and violin. “Shake with ice and make the best damndest space martini you have ever had,” says
group founder Kelly Sheets.

A great group of people will be serving coffee and food downstairs. Come one and all to see the Indiana Electronic & Experimental Music Exposition.
-Dan Marquis (dmarquis@patternhungryrecords.com)
earthhousecollective.org
audioreconnaissance.com
patternhungryrecor

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://earthhousecollective.blogspot.com/2009/02/indiana-electronic-experimental-music.html' title='Indiana Electronic & Fee: $30

This two part workshop begins as a group posture flow in circular form, making mandalas with the form of yoga asana and the connections of energy in the circle. This yoga practice helps create sacred space in ourselves and the space around us. In the second part of our workshop, we enter into a meditation that invites creative flow in making our mandalas.

Mandalas are circular symbolic images that can inspire wisdom and healing in our lives. We draw from the collective circle of energy in this space to help us empower our inner core and purpose in life. The symbolic mandalas we create will assist us as a visual meditative focus to take with us and incorporate into our lives.

POSTPONED: Screening of "The Garden", NOMINATED FOR AN ACADEMY AWARD

POSTPONED: Screening of "The Garden", As it has been NOMINATED FOR AN ACADEMY AWARD, and the director Scott Kennedy must remain in L.A. until the awards show is over :(

hopefully we will have a new date for this ASAP.

Inauguration Event and Fundraiser

The Earth House Collective at 237 N. Her exhibit includes images and handwritten postcards that illustrate daily life, common struggles, and shared hope that fair trade brought to these communities. Learn how these communities put violent struggles behind them and now utilize fair trade business relationships as the means by which they fight for justice in their lives. These two distinct communities, who speak different languages, live on different continents, and practice different religions, have more in common than they ever imagined.

Fair Trade: Postcards in Solidarity photography exhibit is sponsored by The Earth House Gallery, Global Gifts, and The Fair Trade Resource Network.

This Friday, December 19, opening will start at 5:00 pm and will be open through 10:00 pm. Light refreshments will be available and open stage entertainment wll begin at 8:00 pm. Our screenings have become one of the most exciting events in the city.

Free and open to everyone, we have brought cutting-edge filmmakers to town and screened the most important films on our most pressing social issues. Our biggest events have become full blown festivals and a great community of activists, concerned neighbors, artists, church folk, college students, and everyday people have become connected.

In 2009, we plan to take the film series to a whole other level and would love your help and involvement ...

Help Build Earth House Films

The Earth House Film series is on the verge of becoming something special.

Each week (primarily Thursday nights at 7:30 PM), we will be screening documentaries and other important films that explore the most pressing social issues of our time. We also hope to show films from local and mid west filmmakers, great movies from the past, and bring filmmakers to town.

The film forum is entirely community supported.

If you have enjoyed this film series and want it to grow and succeed, please become or have your business or nonprofit become a monthly sponsor of Earth House Films. By financially supporting the film series, your organization will get advertising and mentioned at the screenings, links on our website, emails, and blogs, and get reserved seating for your group on our biggest nights.

Make Your Donation Here

Lockerbie Central and Earth House now have their own secure donation web page. Please consider becoming a monthly sponsor of the film forum. By donating $20, $50, or $100 a month, we can build an amazing movement around film, film making, social justice, and grassroots community. All donations are tax deductible and mention the film forum in the comments section.

From Indianapolis Monthly, December 2008:

Best Free Film Series: Since 2006, the left-leaning congregation at Lockerbie Central United Methodist Church has screened monthly documentaries inside the 125-year-old church. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country’s most blighted neighborhoods. Growing their own food. Feeding their families. Creating a community.

But now, bulldozers are poised to level their 14-acre oasis.

The Garden follows the plight of the farmers, from the tilled soil of this urban farm to the polished marble of City Hall. Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from countries where they feared for their lives if they were to speak out, we watch them organize, fight back, and demand answers:

Why was the land sold to a wealthy developer for millions less than fair-market value? Why was the transaction done in a closed-door session of the LA City Council? Why has it never been made public?

And the powers-that-be have the same response: “The garden is wonderful, but there is nothing more we can do.”

If everyone told you nothing more could be done, would you give up?

* * *

The Garden has the pulse of verité with the narrative pull of fiction, telling the story of the country’s largest urban farm, backroom deals, land developers, green politics, money, poverty, power, and racial discord. The film explores and exposes the fault lines in American society and raises crucial and challenging questions about liberty, equality, and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable among us.

Earth House on FOX 59!

The Earth House will be featured in the Friday 12/4/08 edition of Fox 59 Morning News, during a segment highlighting fair trade and other alternative options for holiday shopping.
Be sure to tune in around 7:30 am to catch the conversation!

Alternative Gift Fair

Go local and green this Christmas at Indianapolis’ first annual Alternative Gift Fair

INDIANAPOLIS, [OCTOBER 26] –On Saturday, November 29th, 10:00AM to 4:00 PM, Lockerbie Central United Methodist Church and Earth House Collective, 237 N. East St., will be hosting the first annual Indianapolis Alternative Gift Fair. A 4:00 PM film showing and 5:00 PM dinner will follow the fair. The day will also include a 7:00 PM holiday concert featuring global music.

Half traditional church holiday bazaar, half farmers’ market, the all day fair aims to be a positive holiday experience. “With the lousy economy and people increasingly conscious of sweatshop-made Christmas presents,” fair organizer Jamie Price says, “the hope is that yuletide shoppers can have a more local, handmade Christmas experience.” Hosted inside the historic downtown church building with an all organic-fair trade coffee shop and art gallery for a community room, local artists, craft makers, bakers, organic farmers, and small retailers will be selling their wares. Shoppers can find a cornucopia of great Indiana goods, including handmade drums, books by local writers, cds by local bands, pottery, paintings, jewelry, Indiana maple syrup, and even soap made from goat milk.

Just as importantly, the fair will feature local social justice nonprofits that work both in central Indiana and globally. “Everybody loves giving gifts and receiving gifts,” Lockerbie Central lay leader Mike Oles said. “This fair allows your Christmas dollars and gifts to have a real impact on the local economy and create positive change.” At the fair, $1.50 will buy a mosquito net for a family in the Democratic Republic of Congo, while a $50 donation can finance a micro-loan in Senegal. There will be plenty of giving opportunities for those doing work locally, too. There will also be an all-organic Holiday goodies bake sale and raffle. Musicians will be playing acoustic Christmas music throughout the day and there will be plenty of activities for the kids.

Who is putting on this event?

*Lockerbie Central United Methodist Church is a progressive, emergent, and lay led United Methodist church located in downtown Indianapolis. The Church is home to Earth House Collective and hosts a fair trade coffee shop.
*The Earth House Collective is a collaboration between artists, activists, small business owners, and community organizations. Dues paying members work together to offer space, support and community for those hoping to make Indianapolis a better place through the arts, wellness and social justice.

EH Grand Opening a Success

With more than 600 people through the doors both Friday and Saturday, this weekend's earth House Grand Opening was a rousing success!

Earth House featured in NUVO!

Be sure to check out the front page NUVO article
